black and white

Learning to see in monotone isn’t instinctive for the majority of photographers. This medium can be extremely challenging, what works in black and white doesn’t always work in colour and vice versa. Monotone tends to favour the simpler composition and the narrower tonal dynamic range. This proves very problematic in my favourite genre of woodland photography as often these scenes contain a huge range of tonal values from deep shadows to specular highlights.

I’ve learned over the years to recognise which images will work in mono and once that scene is metered and the composition locked in I always shoot the scene in the monotone setting on the camera rather than converting a colour file in post processing.
